3rd Annual Dragonfly Festival at Oak Hammock Marsh

Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre is celebrating the third Dragonfly
Festival on July 19th and 20th. Discover the lifecycle of these amazing
insects that call wetlands home. Many activities are planned for all ages
including dragonfly safaris, a dragonfly art workshop using food, live
nymphs in an aquarium display, a collection of beautiful photographs,
informative presentations and films, dipping for dragonfly nymphs, playing
a life size dragonfly board game, dress up costumes and more. Our Café
will be serving a special lunch and dragonfly jewelry and other items
may be purchased in our Giftshop. Take home a beautiful event poster as
a keepsake.

Events and Activities:
Dragonfly Food Art Workshop – Sat. or Sun. 11-12,
12-1, or 1-2 pm - Use your imagination and creativity to make a dragonfly
out of different foods and enter to win great prizes (All supplies at
marsh, just bring your imagination). Two separate contests, one Saturday
and one Sunday, and winners will be announced at 3:30 pm both days. Age
group categories 3-6, 7-9, and 10-12 years old.
Dragonfly Collection – Come and visit the interpretive
centre to see pictures and specimens of the many dragonfly species in
Manitoba (provided by University of Manitoba).
Critter
Dipping/ Invertebrate sampling – Throughout the Day - Grab
a net and a bucket and dip for dragonfly nymphs. Learn the importance
of dragonflies in the food chain and to wetlands.
Microvideo presentations (Saturday Only) – 11:30
am and 2:00 pm - See dragonfly nymphs up close on our theatre screen and
find out cool facts about dragonflies.
Horse-Drawn Wagon Rides (Sunday only from 12:30 to 4:30pm)
Explore some lesser known part of the marsh with local nature-lover Allan
Webb and his horse-drawn wagon and listen to the many stories and information
he has to tell you. Extra fee of $3 for non-members of the Interpretive
Centre and $2 for members apply for this half-hour to forty-five minutes
ride.
Theatre Presentations (Sunday Only) – 11:30 am
and 2:30 pm - Enjoy presentations by Jim Duncan from Manitoba Conservation
on the Manitoba Dragonfly Survey such as “How to identify dragonflies”
and “The dragonfly survey”.
Dragonfly
Safaris – Both Days 10:30 am, 12:30, 1:30, 3:30, and 5:30
pm - Come and explore the lesser known trails at the marsh with a net
and field guide. Join an expert to catch, identify one of the many types
of dragonflies, and then release them back in the marsh.
Face Painting – 12:00 to 5:00 pm - Have one of
the many species of dragonflies painted on your cheeks by one of our artistic
nature interpreters.
Dragonfly clay craft - Make a beautiful dragonfly out
of mouldable clay for yourself or as a gift for someone special.
Dragonfly board game - Take a turn playing our life
size dragonfly board game. Follow dragonfly eggs through their life cycle.
Watch them metamorphosize into adults and then lay a new batch of eggs
to create a new generation of dragonflies.
Canoe
Rides – Throughout the day - Explore the marsh from a dragonfly’s
point of view as you paddle in one of our 3 voyageur-style canoes for
a forty-five minute to one hour excursion. Extra fee of $3 for non-members
of the Interpretive Centre and $2 for members for this ride.
Café - Special lunch for visitors (dragonfly
theme, no dragonflies in lunch).
