Narrow-Leaved Sunflower (Helianthus
maximilianii)
Another of the signature wildflowers of
the tall-grass prairie is narrow-leaved sunflower. Growing to a height
of 150 cm, the plants produce abundant large flowers on leafy stalks
in August. Producing tiny replicas of "sunflower seeds" in September
they are an important source of food for resident and migratory birds.
