Smooth Aster (Aster laevis) Late August and September is aster season and smooth aster is one of the most common on the tall-grass prairie. Leafy stalks produce a large panicle of small flowers. These late flower are important nectar sources for insects preparing for migration or hibernation. Their tiny seeds with dandelion-like parachutes are scattered to the wind in October.
