Dwarf False Indigo (Amorpha nana) One of the few shrubs to persist on the open prairie, dwarf false indigo produces many spikes of tiny purple flowers in late June and into July. New stems often arise from below ground to regularly replenish the plant, as most of the above ground stems will only persist for a year or two, an adaptation to regular grazing and burning on the prairie.
