Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) This well-known plant is at home in the tall-grass prairie. Black-eyed susans are particularly common in Manitoba's parkland region where the prairies slowly mix with the aspen forests. The flowers open late June through July on short stalks rising to 30 cm. The hairy leaves remain in a tight basal rosette.
