Western Prairie Fringed Orchid (Platanthera
praeclara)
The area around Manitoba's Tall-Grass
Prairie Preserve is home to the only known Canadian population of this
exotic-looking orchid. It is classed as an "endangered species" in Canada
and Manitoba's population may be the largest in the world. Stalks holding
as many as 30 flowers may rise to nearly 1 m in height. Night-flying
sphinx moths, with their very long tongues are one of the few insects
that can reach to the bottom of the long nectar spur of the orchid flowers.
