Proposed: Commercial Light Industry and Storage Sites at Star Lake

Letters of Opposition sent to Manitoba Parks

To: Brian Pallister, Premier of Manitoba

To: Sarah Guillemard, Minister of Conservation and Climate

To: Dale Sobkowich, Head of Commercial Policy, Planning and Programing, Parks

Dear Government Officials,

I am writing to you to object to the building of commercial light industry and storage sites at Star Lake. The area that was suggested was the old Star Lake dump site and that was taken away as there were concerns with the damage to the land and eventually the water. The land there has recovered nicely over the years and it doesn’t make sense to clear and have commercial light industry and storage in this area. Many cottagers walk, run, bike, berry pick and enjoy nature in this area.

First off, Star Lake is a small lake. The increased traffic on the already poorly maintained gravel roads would make the area unsafe for families/children while also causing further damage to the stability of this road. Next, the area is only a few hundred metres (300 metres to be exact) from cottagers that are already trying to get away from the noise pollution in the city.

Please, find a site that won’t affect the safety and well-being of the cottagers in the area. We propose looking at an area around the South Whiteshell Transfer Station. This area is far enough away from cottagers, but still close enough to all the major lakes in Whiteshell Provincial Park.

My grandmother celebrated her 60th year at Star Lake this past July 31st. We love this lake and the quiet solitude it provides.

Thanks,
 Anders Giesbrecht
